The Marrasts of Paraclete-Grenadea W.I

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

About my family:
The Marrast family is a very big and ever growing
family who originated from Paraclete, St.Andrews
Grenada. Other families that are related to us are the
Berkeleys directly descended from, Gardner, Flanders,
Mc.Intosh, Forresters, Chichesters, whiteman, Stewarts,
Robinsons and Williamson. The name Marrast it is
believed was told to be of Portuguese origin, but until
recently I have discovered differently. Infact it is
more likely that it came from France as there are
several links and documentd stories of Marrast peolpe
involved in politics and other such things. An cousin-
Bernie.J.Marrast has actually made contact with a
Marrast person in Nice, France..(intend to travel there
soon)
The "Marrast family of Grenada" would of descended from
one Sophie Flament who married a Marrast (whose name I
haven't found out yet)she shopie died on the 23rd of
February 1853and was 83 yrs old She would of been born
in 1770).They then had a daughter called Virtoire
Marrast (died 22/11/1867..age 74 yrs and was born in
1793). Virtiore then had two sons with a gentleman
whose name is not mentioned at present. The boys was
Charles Eugine Marrast and Louis Ferdinand Marrast.
Eugine died at the age of 24 years on the 9th of
January 1848 without and heirs so to speak. Louis
Ferdinand Marrast married Isabella Norton (Marrast) who
when she died was returned to England in Cornwall we
believe. However, Louis had shops and land in
St.Andrews and also had extra martial affairs or indeed
got married again.(the latter would be hard to believe
considering the the period). However, they had two sons
that we know off,William (willie)Marrast and Dee Authur
Marrast and a half sister called Olivia.

William inturn had "alot" of children and we do know
that not all are full brothers and sisters. Dee also
had "alot" of children and again not all would off been
full brothers and sisters. The family then sprad from
there with my Grandad Joseph Septmus Marrast,(aka-
Kepi)and Dees own children and olivias that I do not
know off yet.

The Marrast family I know were wealthy at the time but
with the passing of Louis Ferdidnand Marrast some
unsrupelious events took place which saw the errosion
of the Marrast wealth. That in itself is another book.
So as you can see this is only the tip of the beginning
of the family tree of the "marrast family" and other
associated relations. much, much more to come..

Contry, The Grenadian Marrast family goes way beyond that in Greanda. Joseph Marrast shows up in Grenada beyond 1770. Maybe there are many Josephs.

Nice stuff.

Fedon, the Marrast Family is bigger than that as you
rightly said. however, the writer of the mention my
grandfather name in his research.

Dee Authur Marrast is my grand-father he married to
Elvira Alexis, which was my grand-mother. My mother was
the youngest child in the family.

Dee Marrast had other children, and I knew them very
well. The entire family was very close.

Fedon as you said the Marrast family is still wider
than that.

I don't know what year he was born, but I can find out.

My mother was the youngest of all the siblings.

I know that he died in the 1940s and my grand-mother died after. I know where the burial site and grave, on the same property.

The family member that recently died, his father has land that is in boundary with my grand-father property.
Hurriacanes Ivan and Emiley destroyed the nutmeg in that piece of property. My mother was in charge of that piece of property, but nobody goes to that land again because all the nutmeg trees were destroyed by the two hurriacans.

My mother died in 2008, and while she was ill on bed a cousin came and visited her, and the cousin told us that it was three Marrast brothers and one went to live in st.George's.

I firmly believe that the Marrast family cam from some old French planter from one of the old plantation, and he must have gone to Paraclete and spread his seeds. Then the children moved from Paraclete to the neighbouring villages of Upper & Lower St. John, Gut, in the parrish of St.Andrew.

Country, It would be great if you get those dates. I can help make some connections for you.
I don’t know a lot about the Marrast except for what is on the Internet. It looks like they were a well connected family in the old days. Louis Ferdinand Marrast was a colorful character in the 1800’s up to the early 1900’s. Also mentioned is the Marrast Brothers owned “The Stores” in St. George’s from the 1800’s into the 1900’s. The Stores became "Everybody's Ltd. There are also places in St. George with the name like:

Marrast Road at Tempe, St. George, Grenada
Marrast Hill, St. George’s, Grenada

Interesting stuff.

My Marrst family memeber/s in the U.K. who is trying to
trace the family tree is doing the whole thing wrong.

If he wants to trace the family tree, the first thing
he should do is to contact family member he know first
and put pieces together, but he jumping from little
what he knows about the family and heading the France
to contact a white Marrast, as though he is more
interested in finding his European connection, rather
than anything else.

I know some history of Louis Ferdinad Marrast. He had
two set of children. He was married to Dee Arthur
Marrast mother, and he had more three children. Some of
them were girls.

I was told that Ferdinad Marrast wife was a member of
the George's family from Hermitage. She was the sister
of my great-grand-father on my father side, which is
the George family. Therefore, my mother and father are
cousins too. They told us.

Marrast family have one thing in common. They are very
quite and don't like to talk much. Most of the women
have a typical African woman buttocks, but they are not
too tall.

The Paraclete connection, the Marrast family have some
family connection there. Two people from Paraclate
living in Hermitage told us that they are related to
us. One of them is from the Forrester family. so I
believe that the old Forrester man had children with a
women in Paraclete who is related to the Marrast
family.

I know a fella from Paraclate living in Toronto, who
told me about the family connection, but I did not
follow up on the story at that time. He was very close
with one of my aunts and her two sons. I will contact
him to find our more.

Recs, the best way to link up the family tree is to start at home in the villages where the gandparents lived. For example, Paraclete, St. Andrew is the best place to start.

I met some people from Paraclete who told me they are related to me. There is a lady from Paraclete living Hermitage, who told us that we are related, and I met some of her other cousins, who told me we are related.

MY grandfather was Dee Marrast from St. John, St. Andrew, and his wife was Elgiva Alexis.

I have lots of family in Paraclete, because the Marrast family moved from Paraclete, to Upper and Lower St. John.

CM, I've been meaning to tell you that I knew a James Marrast who lived on Cherry Hill. He was married with children. They were Jehovah's Witnesses.

He died about 2 yrs ago in March I believe. Why don't you look up the archives in the Orbituary on Gogouyave. I remember seeing his picture there as I knew someone who died around the same time.

I've known the Marrasts of Cherry Hill since I was a young girl. As far as I know his wife and one or two of the children still live there-but I'm subject to correction.

Judsy it is a good thing you mention James Marrast. I
saw his obituary on Gouyave News last year.

What makes it so funny is that some of the other
Marrast men had the same first and last name.

there was another James Marrast who died in New York
last year. I knew him very well. He was the uncle of
the Marrast fella who wrote the piece of history of the
family.

One of uncle name was Desilva Marrast, and there was
another cousin name Desilva Marrast, who was the
brother of James Marrast.

Whever I visit Grenada, I always go to St Andrew and
walk through the villages of Upper & Lower St. John,
than I will walk up to gut and then go down to Paraclete.

I always think about my ancestors when i make the
journey. In addition, I always stop and talk to those
cousins I know, because when I was small, my mother
used to take us to those villages and look for family member.

Our favourite cousin was Will Marrast. He was a very
nice cousin.

The Marrast family is very populated in upper and lower St. John, St. Andrew, the the origins of the older memebers came from Paracelette.

I was told by an older mamaber of the the Marrast family that ther were three Marrast brothers and one of them went to St. George'sand the other two stayed in St.John, St. Andrew.
