Subject: Why Can't The Caribbean Tap into the New Market for Coconut Water?

Guys, I never thought I'd see the day when I have to buy coconut water. I grew up in Kingston but when I used to visit my grand-parents in the parishes of St. James and Hanover, I would drink coconut water. I had the most dexterous cousins. They would climb the myriad of coconut trees on their property like a monkey, and would toss the coconut down. They would use their machetes to chop off a piece for me to use as a scooper to eat the flesh of the coconut. I remember that I used to drink so much coconut water to the point where it seemed as if my belly might burst.

I don't drink soda anymore. I only drink natural fruit juices and coconut water from Indonesia. Vitacoco, a brand from Indonesia cost $3.99 for 33.8 fl oz. Other brands like Zico, Pure Naked, O.N.E Coconut Juice, Blue Money, etc, I will buy as well.

Guys, why didn't the Caribbean think about this before countries like Thialand, Brazil and Indonesia? We have an abundance of coconut trees. The water is packed with potassium, B-complex vitamins and bio-active enzymes that aid us in our digestion and metabolism.

Who would like to propose the idea to Tillman Thomas?

Always worth a try, but I guess why those other countries can do it on a very commercial basis is they are much larger countries and probably have acres and acres of the trees, compared to ours which are mostly dotted around all over the place. There may well be more around the Island, but I only know of one plantation type location near me.

I am not so keen on the commercial product, I think it loses something in the processing.

I like to cut a whole set of nuts, and bottle it, keep it the fridge for a few days, and then whamo, it is usually sweet and cool, and not that kind of watery insipid taste the commercial ones seem to have. But then they must do something to it to stop it going off.

Brother Snow, the coconut trees are badly damaged just because the governments did not see them as money makers. Sure South East Asian countries are larger but they are proned to natural disasters like the Caribean. CARICOM must find a solution to tap into this market and split the profit among the islands involved.

As someone pointed out to me we’d need to buy those licenses to export on a whole sale basis; and that ‘ent cheap. On the other hand I see fresh coconuts in the market by me daily. Saying that I must find out where they come from. What I do notice is that the head has a layer of candle wax (Spum.)I would want to believe it is to keep the water fresh.

One thing I've noticed about coconut in Grenada is that from all appearances, there seems to be a mite that has infected many of the indigenous trees.

As for the production of Coconut water
From what source?
In Grenada the majority of Coconut cultivations
are on the sea coast and due to Sand Mining
SEVERAL TENS OF ACRES OF LAND HAVE BEEN DESTROYED/ERODED

THAT WAS THE EMPHASIS ON CONCRETE and not
thinking about alternatives/importation

St.Vincent & The Grenadines banned SAND MINING
over 30 years ago
Grenadians with the quik fix/instant coffee
mentality went for whole sale sand mining at the expense of the country

The ministry came round last year and sprayed all our trees. since then they have gone mad with great bulging graps.

I am not too sure that they aren't over producing. I have been a bit slow to pick some of the trees, and I think they are stressed.

Did you have an infestation of a mite? If so did the spraying get rid of it? What the ministry needs to do is get up in the canopy of those tall trees and spray then. As I have said before there is a mite that has infested the indigenous coconuts and may be responsible for the low production. Once we subtract the losses caused by Ivan and Emily and natural death then it is time enough for the rest to be back to full production. Sure you have heard about people making dry coconut in Grenada and selling it as the real deal. Expat if you are afraid to drink yours make dry coconut and sell; there is a great market out there for that. You will have to find out the method for yourself oui. That is a great laugh in itself. And they say we chuppidee!!!

I may not be able to answer your question but I would suggest some clues. One is similar to the banana problem. The average coconut farm in Brazil and south east Asia are larger than Grenada and all the islands, except Hispaniola and Cuba. Besides, following up on your reference to Jamaica, I was struck in travelling through the countryside in Jamaica and seeing so many 'baldhead' coconut trees. I expected anti-rasta baldheads but not so many diseased coconut trees. These factors can perhaps provide some clues. I love the coconut water too but I am very picky with the brands. If you notice some of them, especially the ones from Thailand are laced with white sugar - basically coconut flavored sugar water. Others come from known poisoned territories.

You can't just slap an organic label on products. In order to enter the organic market is quite lucrative but there is a certification process, which is quite rigorous in certain countries. If you want to export premium organic products in these countries there is inspection, soil testing, etc. If not everyone could slap 'organic' on a product. I think Guyana and Suriname have the best potential of tapping into that market.

Calypso hurricanes have done serious damage to coconut trees in Grenada. We haven’t got enough coconut trees left to market coconut water on a wide scale.

When I was in Jamaica I saw many coconut trees without tops. The trees looked dead, but standing.

In Trinidad there are Indians all over the place selling coconut water. They can be seen at traffic lights selling to peoples in vehicles.

So Calypso darling you never thought you would buy coconut water; I never thought I would buy water and pay more for it than gas. Think about it; gas is cheaper than water.

Commie, does the hurricanes damage our trees so much dear? South East Asian courtries are prone to cyclones, droughts, earthquakes, volcanos, tsunamis, etc, but they still manage to have a plan. If the islands focus more about ways to take care of the trees instead of seeing them die then they would be in big business.

I hope he save enough rent money and move on
I hate to see people mislead my people, lonliness is a terrible thing, commie seems bewitched or possessed somehow you cant do it to be in belive in God

wht do you mean what I am going to wear you real rude? You can borrow me a short black skirt the neighbour say I give him a h ard on and I look like a porn star when I wear it since he compliment me about my skin I still in the skirt, this is how stupid I look and I am. of all the nice things I can dress like a classy lady I will run up and down so the neighbours can laugh at me all day in a little black skirt
