Subject: Spice Mas Corporation- Insidious and Insipid

1. The Spice Mas Corporation in its REFUSAL to issue the permit for the Carnival Saturday night show at Moonlight City is being lazy and hypocritical. Plain and simple.

2. Pan in Grenada will not be saved or resuscitated through the absence of choice to Carnival consumers. Its revival will require a consistent effort from the ground up. Interest in pan will not automatically spring forth out of a year long drought of pan on the national calendar and the infertile soil that the Ministry of Culture et al are tilling.

3. Having had an entire year to plan the execution of a successful Carnival season and failing so to do, the Corporation is now resorting to bullying tactics.

4. In an age of global competition and the removal of protectionism, the Spice Mas Corporation is saying that they are unable/ unwilling to produce a show of a standard which can on its own attract a crowd? Serious cause for concern.

5. The logic implicit in the Corporation’s decision is flawed. The Corporation cannot establish that the capacity crowds which attend Moonlight City seriously consider or even contemplate Panorama as an alternative venture. Much less to even suggest that the Moonlight City show is a competitor.

6. How and in what ways is a show which utilises local acts and gives them arguably the largest public platform for their Carnival offerings, contrary to the legitimate interests of the Spice Mas Corporation?

7. The decision of the Corporation is both insidious in its implications and insipid in its justification.

By allowing the calypso competition to become a platform for "politics", the organisers doesn't realise it, but they are saying to the market, you have a right to "vote"...isn't that politics? Corporation...get rid of politics from the competition and watch people start respecting the calypsonian again and return to the stands!!

With regards to Pan, the people and promoters are dis'in pan. Its our culture, its our national instrument and it requires our support, simple. The players are from our own villages and towns. Not attending is a dis...simple as!! Its not about the corporation... It takes maturity and pride to say Iwer and Kes can wait!!! We are supposed to have differences of opinion on all things, but on issues where the "people, especially young people" are placing their hearts on the line...to overlook that is unjustifiable and shameful...please don't defend non-attendance at panorama.

Whats the answer?

1. Corporation needs "integrity" in its approach and development of what is a product - carnival
2. Because we're starting from this odd place, a voluntary agreement to start MLC later to give our national events an opportunity to be support as well
3. Disqualify all politics from the competition. Inspiring political commentary welcomed, but this crap about "give him blows" take a trip...I didn't travel 22k miles to see anyone get blows with throw-way lyrics. Imagine, the judges overlooked the inspiration of Oil Down Nation (Beast)...that's a crime against culture right there!!!

To all those that disagree with the ruling of the carnival organization: should carnival be cancelled all together and only shows/events such as white in the moonlight should take it's place?

Am only asking because from where I sit, (and am not on any carnival committee, what I see is a carnival where everyone other than carnival makes money, so, in that spirit, tell me, should carnival be cancelled?

As far as I see, fancy mas in Grenada is dying a slow and painful death due to Monday Nite Mas; Panorama died from 'Moonlight City Syndrome', and Calypso Monarch is dying also from 'Moonlight City Syndrome', so, please, make me understand the true purpose of carnival and if it even make sense? (I heard they (the same carnival organization) is hosting Soca workshops for school children but no calypso workshops, hmmmmmm, I wonder why?)

The way some of you are talking, we should just cancel the entire carnival and allow private promoters to do whatever they want. What do you think?

Culture suppose to be bigger than the man, but for some reason, Grenadians believe, as long as they or their friends or family are making money, then to hell with Culture.

1. The suggestion somehow is that what takes place at Moonlight City on Carnival Saturday Night is contrary to Grenada’s culture? Absurd!

2. The suggestion that a 7 hour event, once a year, in the remote village of La Poterie is capable of torpedoing one of the 3 proclaimed Pillars of Grenada’s carnival is laughable and even more absurd!

3. Even if this is true the blame cannot be placed on the enterprising and intrepid promoters of the popular Carnival Saturday night show.

4. People reserve the right to vote with their money. If your event is unable on its own to wins the most votes or even sufficient votes then you must go back to the drawing board with your product. The powers of the State cannot be used to protect, maintain and nurture inefficiency and waste. Revamp or scrap!

5. It is not shows like the Moonlight City event which are signalling the death knell of Pan; it is a year long death march which culminates in the funereal spectacle at the Stadium on Carnival Saturday night. After Panorama each year what other major exposure is provided by the Ministry of Culture et al for Pan?

6. In all seriousness Spice Mas Corporation cannot be serious.

I agree!

so lets suppose it is scrapped

so should the STATE be still called on to fund and advertise carnival?

should it left up to the private entrepreneurs to spend the monies to promote carnival ?

I think that you have touched on a very important issue as it relates to who is paying for it? Indeed it is promoters that do spend a vast amount of money marketing their events both locally and abroad to draw in the numbers, and yes the government does spend as well.

But let's be honest I cannot remember the actual amount of money that the extensive study done two years ago claimed that was generated by the product called carnival based on airport taxes and other revenue streams but it was millions over the two week period, however out of a budgeted figure of 800 thousand the government of the day was only able to provide 400 thousand last year?

I believe that something should be put in place that is very simple to work with, for instance a fixed percentage of all port taxes during the two week called carnival is add to the account that is set up for carnival and in that account it the profit from the previous year, this now forms the budget for the next carnival season and if there is to be any additions to this it must be supplied by the private sector through sponsorship and or donations.
The board of directors will be responsible for the proper management of these runs to plan and execute the event that is carnival for that year.

1. CHOICE. Plain and simple.

2. Competition is the engine of growth.

3. The Corporation wants Capitalists’ bottom lines with Communists’ arrangements.

4. The Corporation does not hold a monopoly on what is Grenada’s Culture. The People do.

5. If the Corporation’s events are no longer attracting the support of the majority of Grenadian’s then perhaps its events are no longer in step with our Culture.

6. You cannot force an interest in Panorama by holding a proverbial gun to the heads of Carnival consumers. Support for Pan is organic and cultivated with time and consistency.

Ok, I see, so based on your comments, we should just scrap culture, cancel carnival, so Grenadians living abroad can buy a ticket to go to Grenada for White in the Moonlight, instead of Carnival.

And, while we are at it, the Government of Grenada needs to stop giving subventions for different cultural aspects since as you speculate, culture is dead. And no more promotions from the Government either, let the private promoters travel around the world to promote White in the Moonlight, since they are the only ones making money anyway.

In a small country like this, if we have no culture, we have nothing to sell. Further, in this small country that has limited resources and people have limited resources, don't complain about who did not get prize money, and who did not get to travel to other countries to represent Grenada since that same Carnival Corporation would have no money; therefore, we will all live by White in the Moonlight. The End!

Black Woman, why your logic and reasoning is only about banning or canceling carnival? The bottom line is that if the corporation can't provide a good product for public consumption then they should be banned not carnival. You are not adding anything to this discussion but stick on the point of canceling carnival.

Black woman, you are right on target, were you a sharp shooter in the army..

The Culture is always bigger than the man, check out labor day organization in Brooklyn, this year according to the Carib News, its in jeopardy because we as a people still can't get along....we always pointing fingers but never talking solution(s) unless there is a buddy or friend involved..

Whether you like Pan or not, why should everyone just sit back and watch it die a slow death...
The white in the moonlight do compete with it, and all those who talking, independence calypso show in NY, 30 to 40 people in attendance, also it compete with the Super bowl.....Next year have white out along the NY Independence calypso show, maybe the place go ram.

The point is the same thing been happening in Brooklyn for years from since the days of Topp international, 3 and 4 after carnival promotion in 1 nights.

Black Woman, out problem is all about control. Moonlight City and Monday Night Mas are not affecting Pretty Mas. People participate in Mas of their choice. And some of the choices have a lot to do with economics and social class.

The Carnival Committee do not care about promoting Grenada's culture. Party politics has one foot in it already, so it has no good intention to promote culture.

The big question is: Will the people in authority will be that stupid enough to force party overs where to go and have fun during the carnival season?

bro, we seem to have different opinion on the subject.

Are we trying attract T&T Carnival People, with we panorama?

The culture of carnival we have developed over the must be allow to grow.

Throughout the year we promoting Jamaican culture and when carnival come, we want to pattern T&T Carnival.

Panorama is like Jazz Festival. It has is people who will attend the event, but most Grenadians are not into panorama. Are we looking for T&T Dollars to circulate in St.George parish or do we really care about our culture that is deeply rural and very creative?

I am just giving my opinion. I might be wrong, but that is the way I see it.

Let us not get mixed up with "Townocracy" and fool rural people and them that is democracy.

You've approach your critique in a very genuine way.

Maybe their disingenuous actions are not even deserving of serious thought.

Plain and simple: It's time to dismiss the sanctimionuos BS and Pan and Panorama from this discussion.

This is really about the Bunji Garlin show they plan to put on after panorama. It may even start before the moonlight city show would have started.

Ask them why they put off the "Grenadians Legends In Concert" show they had planned for earlier this year. Was there another moonlight sity show that night? And find out which "Legend" they did not have the balls to personally ask to perform. Instead they were trying to get a third party to ask him. Some relationship for them to have with their Legends. (LOL)

You know, the concept of such a body (SMC)is really a good one. It appears however, this SMC is made up of several genuine, hard working and capable subornates operating with their heads firmly buried in the sand. And a few thuggish, North Korean-styled dictators leading the way.

With just a few months to go before the carnival season. When production of such a magnitude is in its final stage, anyone who wields such a sledge hammer is either ruthless, devoid of business planning and expertise, a serious Bad John or all of the above.

One would think that anyone who sets out to achieve the ambitious plans outlined in the SMC's presentation in three months beginning with the shutting down of a production that takes at least a yr to plan is a serious Bonehead!

Guys selling dope on the street corner operate smoother and more clever than that. Sorry!

Because pan is not my cup ah Tea. The thing is we are consumers and we will support what we like and avoid what we don't like.

In my view the corporation is starting off on the wrong foot - The goal should be to advance all aspects of the carnival - I invited some friends from some other islands with me for Grenada carnival, now I have to explain to them why there will be no white in the moonlight after I talk it up so much.

Why can't they have White in the Moonlight before or after the carnival week?

What is wrong with giving a week to Culture?

What is the purpose of Carnival? Carnival is not a private venture, it is a public cultural season, that is what you should be "talking up".

As I see it now, these same promoters have taken over Christmas as well. Hmmmm, talk about competition, no church on Christmas anymore, because big promotions on Christmas eve, so people too tired or drunk for Christmas, hmmmmm. Talk about progress.
