Coard's book...

I am reading Bernard Coard's book and am about halfway through. It is a slog with detailed descriptions of Marxist process and central committee of the party meetings.

Here is an interesting tidbit, however. According the Coard, the Cubans were convinced that the US would never invade using US troops. They were certain the US would use a proxy army as they did in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs or as with the Contras in Nicaragua. As a result, the Cubans insisted that the island's defense be designed to repel that sort of an attack rather than that of the US troops.

The Grenadians disagreed and were frustrated that the Cubans wouldn't support them but were too intimidated by Fidel and Company to push back too much.

Eventually, however, the Grenadians appealed to the Soviets for hardware to defend against an attack by US troops. According to Coard, this included coastal defense artillery, large caliber field artillery, ADA and equipment to defend both Caricou and Petit Martinique. Coard traveled to Moscow (to the annoyance of the Cubans) and the Soviets agreed to it all and added more.

Coard said this equipment was to be transported first to Cuba and then to Grenada. On October 25th, 1983 it was still being staged in Cuba for delivery to Grenada.

Had the Cubans and Grenadians had heavy artillery, coastal defense guns and missile based ADA, it would have been a different fight.

I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that the CIA and other American intelligence agencies had zero knowledge of this... if it is true.

Coard said that the Grenadian military thought Calivigny was a terrible place for their main military instillation. It was too far from expected invasion approaches and would be easy for the Americans to isolate with bombing. They wanted their main base in and around Fort Frederick. Again, the Cubans prevailed by intimidating the Grenadians and the base was placed at Calivigny.

Of course this could be Coard engaging in bullshit 20/20 hindsight, self-aggrandizement.

To hear him tell it, he was a tireless, selfless servant of the Revo who's only real failing was naivete.
