Easy to say.

I have said or thought similar things. without the benefit of testimony.

Probably with the cutlass the wife could have been chopped or decapitated while the unarmed man with nothing to hand flailed at him. Anyone would want to do something, but being able to and wanting to are two different things. I am pretty certain running for help seemed like something to do, and I am pretty sure he didn't expect to find the wife murdered.  20-20 is fine.
