Re: "Farewell Letter" re Grenada by Peter Gernert

I signed up for the Army because I needed a job and I wanted the GI Bill for college after.  I signed up to be a paratrooper because I wanted to test myself.   When Grenada was invaded, I went because that's what I had to do.  I didn't hurt anyone in Grenada and I did my duty.  I don't expect any thanks or God's blessings.  I also don't deserve any condemnation.  I wasn't even a pawn. I was a pawn's pawn.  I am proud that I had the courage to do it.  I am proud that I played a role in history.  I don't feel like I deserve credit for good in Grenada since nor do I feel like I deserve blame for the bad.  It is what it is.

For sure a great sense of pride in signing up and being involved in an historical operation. No doubt you got more than you were betting on. And yes, no choice when orders are given.
I recommend to any young person that can't decide what they want to do in life or can't afford an expensive education to join the military.
Can't imagine RD hurting anyone.
