Why West Indians migrate to England (1954)

West Indians emigrate to England not for economic reasons though naturally they are influenced by these factors, the West Indian emigrates to England because they have England in their blood and have to make the pilgrimage for a sort of inverted expiation, because simply ‘going to England’ constitutes the fulfillment of a deep-seated desire that goes right back to childhood.

The East Indian identifies himself with ‘Mother India’, the Chinese with China etc. but the black West Indian has, in a certain way unfortunately, only ‘Mother England’. Like the Englishman his native tongue is English, his education English in concept and even though he looks very different it is no surprise how much the West Indian is, despite himself, every inch the Englishman.

Apart from the twin accidents of geography and race, the West Indian could be said to be more British than the British. Just like every other colonial from Barbados to Bombay he’d been fed a constant diet of Britishness all his life. He studied British history, British geography and English literature. The rulers of Empire had stamped its imprint on every aspect of life in her colonies – except the weather. Faced with the problem of governing its far-flung Empire Britain simply reproduced itself in its colonies. Every facet of daily life: laws, language, government, sports, politics - were exactly the same as in England. Every house had two fuzzy framed photographs in their living rooms: one of Jesus Christ and and the other of the reigning monarch; the newspapers everyone read were English, and next to the Bible was the BBC World Service.

This is indeed interesting. Our identity has always been a struggle for  we mostly have identified with a nation of people who has caused us much isolation.  In Caribbean literature we see this issue of identity occurring over and over again. Marcus Garvey's movement did not eradicate this urge and enabled us to identify with Africa for the continent has remained in turmoil.  We are not "British Subjects" anymore and should never identify with it. The nation only used us for labor and war efforts. We are "British" when our services are needed. We never fully understood  this as a people and are still suffering from this fact. We must joined up with Africa and try to build ourselves from there.

"We must joined up with Africa and try to build ourselves from there."

Why? How about try to build up ourselves on our own? Africa can't give us squat.

Africa can give us more than we know. Slavery caused us to break link with our roots. Why do we used European countries to dig for oil when countries like Nigeria has the technology we need to dig?

Unless someone show me proof, the reason we migrated was because we thought we were English, a staying on what I always believe, that we migrated for money reasons. I can't accept the fact, that we thought  we were white.

OMG! Nigeria is the WORST example to follow when it comes to .... anything! Their oil industry is a disgrace, they've been stealing billions for decades, spilling oil into the Delta region and the local people get absolutely nothing. The LAST people we need in Grenada's fledgling oil sector is Nigerians! Do your homework Cal and stop parroting tired worn out old cliches about "The Motherland".

I know about Nigeria and corruption but many of those oil companies are controlled
by European nations. Dancer is missing my point. We never had an economic connection to Africa as the Asians did to their countries. They were able to trade and do some kind of commerce with them when the whites wouldn't do it. As a result, it increased their economic prospect. We never formed an economic relationship with Africa after independence.
