These workers on my roof weren't employees of the roofing company.  They are essentially subcontractors.   He hires them by the job and they say how fast they will do the job and for what price.  They have every reason to work long, fast and hard as they can make more money doing it.

He isn't taking advantage of them.  He is the sales arm, the credibility, the bond and the insurance for them.  They could never manage that aspect of the business since only one spoke English and just barely.  No, this is definitely a win/win/win.   It was a win for the Guatemalans, it was a win for the roofing company and it was a win for me.

God bless them.

Then you will scorn the lazy S.O.B.s that didn't work for a pittance any more than you would who weren't signed up to your padnah,

You will then say.... Oh there's nothing stopping them from getting work, and they shouldn't be ponsing off the State, when the likes of you and your pardnah will have created the circumstances which put them in that position.... All the time patting yourself on the back for screwing the next average joe out of a livelyhood. and saving yourself 50cents at their expense.

The same crap happened here with the minicab business. There was a modest living to be made by nationals that were prepared to put in the hours.... Then along comes what is usually the Muslim Brotherhood, and bit by bit the rates go down to the point where any normal Brit could not live, maintain the vehicle, run it legally etc. so slowly but surely most car companies become a one nation car company. With the plastic cartons of curry in the back room, and people sleeping the dead hours, and probably doing another job during the day.

It's called the lowest common denominator, and if YOU are ok then I guess you don't give a sheet.

I admire tenacity, and striving, but not when you destabalize the host nation.

It's the equivalent of GEC putting all it's production in Taiwan.

It's so simple.  Just make the minimum wage a million dollars a year then everyone would want to work and we would be a nation of all millionaires.

Christ.  You can't create wealth by making stuff artificially expensive anymore than you can lift yourself off the ground by standing in a  bucket and lifting the handle.

If wages are higher then the things that wages make and the services wages offer must be more expensive.

Your version of economics is to steal from Peter to pay Paul and then pretend it is all upside.  That is weapons grade idiocy.

In any case, why do you hate Guatemalans?  They do better work, faster for less money than anyone else.  Why in the hell do you want to deny those who offer the best value the option to make a living?

Seriously.  How the hell do you think you can create wealth by denying those who offer the best value an opportunity and instead artificially give the work to those who work slower, less skillfully and for more money?   The very idea is stupid as all hell.

Re: James Comey look like a real Macomeh Man

I think my point quite simply was that your new buddy WAS making the cost artificially cheaper.

As you yourself stated these who ever they were doesn't matter... these people could not even manage the language, which kinda implies they are wet backs, which also implies they are probably hot bedding in some dorm or over crowded house being let out by some exploitative fellow Guatemalan or similar.

They may be a faster - better workman.... or maybe not.... usually those that have a bargain will not see the flaws, until after the paint starts peeling. However, as stated whether the work is exported from the country, or undercut by those who can afford to live on half the salary due to their less complicated and probably basic bachelor existence it is unfair competition.

Also in your haste to only see the win win, Maybe it didn't occur to you that while those dullard Americans take 20 times as log to do the work, and charge 5 times as much, they do generally support the economy in which you thrive. Whereas the latest rash of immigrants ...as I said, from where doesn't matter..... usually are sending at least half of what they earn OUT of your economy to their parent country.

As was the case with our Eastern European friends in Europe. Now they are settling in, and overwhelming our hospitals/ care systems, and school system, and creating a housing shortage which puts the locals even further to the bottom of the list.

Try asking some of our posters if they didn't and maybe still do send barrels and cash back for family in Grenada. It's pretty Universal, Just as family back home thinking returnees have printed the money, and can give it away to any family member with a sob story.

By no means am I an expert on economic matters.
Would the economy be better to have people work for 2 bucks/hr, work for free or maybe have slave labour? How does paying someone a wage less than the cost of living benefit the economy?
Sooner or later the support system has to kick in.

What is the difference between products and service off shore for cheap and the same service on shore for cheap?

Re: James Comey look like a real Macomeh Man

Expat: Absolutely, positively nonsense.  The goal of roof work is to get a roof for the best value. It most certainly is not to create work.  You remind me of a conversation Milton Friedman had with a Chinese aparachick.

At one of our dinners, Milton recalled traveling to an Asian country in the 1960s and visiting a worksite where a new canal was being built. He was shocked to see that, instead of modern tractors and earth movers, the workers had shovels. He asked why there were so few machines. The government bureaucrat explained: “You don’t understand. This is a jobs program.” To which Milton replied: “Oh, I thought you were trying to build a canal. If it’s jobs you want, then you should give these workers spoons, not shovels.”

By your logic, the economy would be better served if only native born were allowed to work, minimum wage was $50 an hour and all roofers had to work with one hand tied behind their backs.  That would really create a lot of wealth, wouldn't it?  Bah!

This idea that factories create jobs rather than factories create goods is crypto-socialist twaddle.  The real world doesn't work that way.

As for the argument the work is shoddy, well, you can get shoddy work from anybody of any race so caveat emptor.

Houston: These people were working for a price they negotiated and, based on the newer, high end pickup trucks they were driving, they were doing fine.   A roof has a fixed price and they are peeling off a fair amount because the company that hired them doesn't have a hell of a lot of choices.  They are Guatemalans, not morons.   They deserve to make a living too.

Re: James Comey look like a real Macomeh Man

So am I Hist, but don't we all want value for we money? I went crazy, when ah realize about five years ago, that Trinidad, was importing Chinese Labor to work for the government.  The truth is what will take Trinidians five years to complete, will take the Chinese six months.  In a way everyone gains.  The folks of Trinidad saves ah bunch and what they save, can be used to help the poor folks of that island.

Everyone or most of us when we are spending our own money, we all want value for our money.

Me ent know about England, but ah know for sure SOME Americans especially the Lower class are always looking for something for free.  They want to be paid, but they doh like to work.

Re: James Comey look like a real Macomeh Man

No doubt, roofing is dirty hard work, couldn't pay me enough to do it. The best way out after a couple of days on the job is to tell the supervisor you have to go for a leak. Then climb down the ladder, pack up and get the he'll out of there. Good money indeed but seasonal work.
High end pick-ups here cost about 50 to 65 grand and they seem to be more common than cars in some areas. I often wonder who owns them, the driver or the bank? Or does the driver own the lease?

Re: James Comey look like a real Macomeh Man

Used to be a time when a pick-up was a work vehicle. Had to borrow one when needed for a particular job. Now a days they are king of the road. They are the city folks choice of get around vehicle.
I find the most aggressive drivers are in pick-ups. They drive fast and are always on the tail with that " get out of my way " type of aggressive driving.
Not funny how it is usually pickups in the ditch during winter time.
