The Things That Cause a Quiet Life BY HENRY HOWARD, EARL OF SURREY

My friend, the things that do attain
The happy life be these, I find:
The riches left, not got with pain,
The fruitful ground; the quiet mind;

The equal friend; no grudge, no strife;
No charge of rule nor governance;
Without disease the healthy life;
The household of continuance;

The mean diet, no dainty fare;
True wisdom joined with simpleness;
The night discharged of all care,
Where wine the wit may not oppress;

The faithful wife, without debate;
Such sleeps as may beguile the night:
Content thyself with thine estate,
Neither wish death, nor fear his might.

I find it rather ironic that a cousin of Anne Bolleyn  would compose this poem with all that happened to his relative in King's Henry's court.  It was not an easy time to live in. The Earl was imprisoned. It is a wonderful poem but when we live in a world of tigers, power-hungry men and horrible people, we can just hold on to living. Even if you find a "pretty Jenny," as Dancer would say, she might be in it for something. It is quite challenging to maintain happiness today. There is always something.

Surrey was beheaded by a paranoid Henry VIII on January 19, 1547.

Good poem anyway.
