Willie O'Ree

For those not familiar with the sport of hockey, Willie was one tough pioneer.
Similar to Jackie Robinson of MLB, Willie was the first black player to skate in the NHL. He was subjected to terrible racism but his courage and determination led to many other minority athletes lacing up the skates.
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, a native of France and one of the authors of this story, also has an interesting background. His journey to the big league is fascinating.

Re: Willie O'Ree

Interesting interview with O'Ree. Amazingly humble he is.

Re: Willie O'Ree

' With a post like that  houston  , has  to reply in kind. '

Herb Carnegie is perhaps the best hockey player to not make the NHL.
Born in Toronto
Carnegie began playing hockey with the Toronto Young Rangers and eventually made  it to the semi professional Quebec Provincial League , where he won the MVP 3 Times.

A decade before Willie O'Ree became the first black hockey player in the NHL.

Carnegie  was  given a tryout with the New York rangers in 1948 and was offered  a chance to play for the team's minor league affiliate , but ultimately turned down the offer.
...  During  the time with the Young Rangers , he apparently impressed Conn Smythe , owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs , to a point  where Smythe said he would sign  him , if he was white and allegedly offered to pay $10,000 to anyone who could turn him white.
