Re: The Sweet Life: The ultimate Renaissance Man

Different world. One (of the many) thing I like about sailing in the Caribbean is: it isn't a rich man's plaything. Most local boat owners aren't rich white foreigners, they've been sailing ever since they were kids. You can buy a boat for a little more than the cost of a car, even less if you're prepared to fix her up yourself. And of course, many boats are built in the islands, a skill passed down through the generations, from the original Scottish shipwrights, who were exiled to the Caribbean by Cromwell in the English Civil War of the seventeenth century. In Carriacou and Petite Martinique, there are more boats than cars!

I sailed once in the waters off cape Town - rough, and cold! Ditto England. Never sailed the Med, never sailed across the Atlantic, 2 bucket list items to tick off. The Caribbean is, without doubt, the best place to sail, in the whole world!

Those are glimpses from Derek Walcott's Omeros. A woman needs to be in that picture!
