Why do I get the strange impression that she is simply trying to make a story here with the very typical "exageration" technique. I find it hard to believe that she was taunted so inhumanely over the past years about her mulatto complexion that fighting appeared to be the only method of retaliation.
I have lived in Barbados for a number of years, and it is quite the offset of here; besides the topography that is :-) Many brown skin girls quite like the pop icon herself. It is nothing unheard of or new!!! Alot of "psssst reds" and others usuals, but nothing profoundly offensive or petrifying. Now I could be wrong, and she could have really suffered a rough time in elementary school with the children, but oddly enough I am beginning to think that if in fact she did struggle over the years with the constant taunting, I do not believe it was over her light complexion. Could it be that there was a hidden malice in these kids? Could it be because she was so beautiful and they found the first thing visible about her to make fun of. Which ever way, such things can not be seen as right, in any light. But I have to believe we Caribbean people... well atleast most of us... have ome to the realisation, if not have appreciated that we are a melting pot of different cultures, accents, skin tones, hair types and facial features. The most I would say about the bullying in school was, it was never primarily directed at the light skined type, but more so to my type, the ones with a rich black that some thought was a sign of uglinest. Or even to a greater extent, the east indians whom they always cvalled "the coolies".
In any case, this story is a tad bit hard to believe. Moderated By: mod@spiceislandertalkshop.com
