Cops to check on water use by Daily Nation

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada - The National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) says it has called in the police to help implement strict measures regarding the use of water as Grenada joins other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries grappling with a prolonged drought.
The lack of rainfall has resulted in record declines in water levels at reservoirs and the authorities have been forced to implement the measures as outlined in the Water Services Act for the first time.
Among the measures is a ban on the use of water for watering lawns, washing vehicles and roadways.
"There has been a lack of discipline in terms of conservation. Some people are just not heeding the call and it is directly affecting the supply to others. This is why we are taking it to the next step," said NAWASA manager Christopher Husbands.
"We are engaging the police on this and we expect to have units out this weekend in the different communities attempting to enforce the regulations".
Penalties for violating the Water Services Act include fines and prison terms.
A stringent water rationing schedule is in effect and water is being barged into the sister isles of Carriacou and Petit Martinique on a weekly basis.
"The situation got significantly worst in the last two to three weeks. It has gotten dramatically worst so it is a serious situation. There has been a drastic reduction in the flows," said NAWASA chairman, Terrence Smith.
"If things become really terrible we may look to import water from a neighbouring island. Which neighbouring island? Dominica? But we now understand that Dominica themselves are facing a serious decline in their surfaced runoff."
The last measurable rainfall of .3mm was recorded at the Maurice Bishop International Airport on February 16 meteorological officers have reported.
The authorities are also calling on citizens to desist from engaging in the "burn and slash" method of agriculture warning that it may lead to significant fires as have been the case in recent days. (CMC)
