Fooling enough of the people all of the time is now the national political past-time in Grenada. And so the internal fighting and jockeying for position inside the National Democratic Congress (NDC) follows the well used path of illusion, denial and dishonesty from the politicians in that party.
It is absolutely true that there is a "group of four" within the NDC that is advising the now woefully inept Prime Minister - Tillman Thomas. It is alleged political rejects Lloyd Noel and George Brizan are the ones who have the ears of the PM.
It is the “gang of four” that also triggers the power struggle within the NDC . Many in the party believe that these men ( the gang of four) have great influence on the direction of the country and the PM - without having to give account to anyone. Thus, those big-head boys- and former Revo rejects are jockeying for position because they see Tillman as weak, indecisive and nothing more than a puppet. They publicly say that the only thing keeping Tillman as leader and PM is because the constitution of the NDC party states that as long as the leader of the party is the PM, no one can challenge him/her for leadership.
But what the constitution does not prevent, and Peter David and Nazim Burke is using - is openly preparing and organizing to replace the leader - when the opportune time comes around.
The infighting and jockeying for position is astonishing.
First, there is Peter David who wants to badly become PM. He is using his so-called "most popular politician in Grenada" status to earn support. He has the support of those incompetent cronies he put and keeps in foreign consulates and missions. He also has the support of some ex-Revo murderers and rejects in New York and Toronto and in Grenada. He also has some support in the local media - and the likes of Bascombe and Mark have been alleged to be in his camp. He also has the support of union leader and Revo reject - Chester Humphrey.
But Humphrey support for him (David) is limited because any support would have to come after he is anointed as leader of the party. In other words, Humphrey can deliver votes to David during an election campaign by using his union platform to influence voters to vote for David and the NDC.
David is without a doubt lining up his team of supporters for the big show.
Then there is Nazim Burke. Burke is not as "popular" as David - but he is using his office and election result - having won the biggest margin of votes than any other in the NDC - as the grounds for demonstrating that he is strong and likable. He is also using his status as the "smartest" one within the party to get support.
Burke has the support of the old guards of the party. He would most likely win over Tillman supporters who are older and more conservative. But like David, Burke has some old Revo rejects and murderers in his ranks - and they too are jockeying for position. He also has the support of some in the media like "The New Today" papers i.e. George Worme.
This is the basic setup on the NDC political chess board and if the PM was honest; and if the political wanna-be's was honest with themselves - they would admit that there are changes happening in the party.
A frank and strong PM would not have a “gang of four” controlling him as a puppet. A strong PM would not – on every Monday morning - jump on a plane to make some inconsequential visit to some country or to some meeting - every time the going gets rough for him. And what is more insulting, despite the fact the Tillman has become the most traveled PM in the shortest period of time, he has failed to bring back any tangible benefits - he has not brought back - not even a tiny bit of the salt-fish tail for Grenadians.
No, a strong and candid leader would have woven a different narrative and picture of his government and party. He would begin by laying down the gauntlet the he is the leader and PM and would be so - for a very long time. He would put those aspirants under heavy, heavy manners - a condition they know all too well about.
Proselytizing is a healthy part of politics. Turning Grenadians into dozing passengers on a trip to a surprise destination- especially one that they did not vote for - is not.
NDC infighting and complicity is definitely reminiscent of the Revo days of old - only with one exception- the guns are not part of the process - so far.
And so Tillman is an enabler by denying that there is no infighting and a “gang of four” in his party. It means that Tillman, David and Burke figure it's easier to win power by fooling enough of the people enough of the time - than to speak an inconvenient truth.
That leaves Grenadians sleeping on a very bumpy and lumpy political mattress - and are left to choose between leaders willfully ignoring the same danger signals of the past.
There is something under your bed Grenadians.
