Track Star Marion Jones Signs With Tulsa 03/10/10 11:27 am
Tulsa - Former world champion sprinter Marion Jones is now a member of the Tulsa Shock.
Jones was introduced as the newest member of the team at a press conference Wednesday morning.
Jones went through an individual workout with the team over the weekend.
"Watching her go through drills, I saw a player who's perfect for our system," said Shock Head Coach Nolan Richardson. "The one thing I do know is she can run and any player on my team who wants to be successful needs to be able to run."
Jones says she can't wait to begin training camp and learn more about Tulsa.
"I'm extremely excited to join the team and the WNBA," Jones said. "After a lot of thought, I realized this is a great gift for me because of Coach Richardson's uptempo style of play."
Jones won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. But, after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs, Jones was stripped of those medals.
She was also ordered to serve a six-month prison sentence for lying to investigators.
Since then, Jones has owned up to her mistakes and become an outspoken figure by encouraging people to stay away from performance-enhancing drugs.
Basketball is not new for Jones. She played guard at North Carolina and helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1994 national championship as a freshman.
The Phoenix Mercury selected Jones in the third round of the 2003 Draft, but never played.
The Tulsa Shock begin the 2010 season May 15th at home against the Minnesota Lynx.
